Homemade Halloween

My mom has always loved Halloween, and growing up, the thing I remember most is that I always had the BEST costumes.  My mom was not a sewer but a teacher at my school was and every year she would make my halloween costume.  I loved it because I got to be things no one else was and even if I was something traditional (like a witch...I think I was a witch 5-6 times) I would have the coolest cape or dress or something to make it original.  The most well remembered costume that you will hear me talk about any time halloween costumes comes up is when I was 4 and I was a unicorn.  I was a pink unicorn and my main and tail was purple tulle (which everyone pulled on and I got soooo mad!) and a silver horn.  It was the best costume EVER!  I even think some college friends may have some photos of me with the hood on in college (I pray these never surface!).

I tell you this not to brag about my awesome costumes or to make you jealous (though I know you are) but to invite you in to my newest adventure - the making of the halloween costume.  When Maddie was born, I knew that I wanted her to have cool, high quality costumes.  I originally thought to have my mother in law/master seamstress do them, but have since decided that I wanted to take on this task.  I took a facebook poll on what she should be and got an overwhelming amount of ideas.  We settled on a pink dinosaur...not totally sure how but Cayton really liked it.  So, I found a pattern and have begun the process.  This is the pattern:
And this is where I am thus far:
I plan to blog about my little sewing adventures over the next few days...or weeks...but there are a few things you should know if you plan to follow this little saga.
  1. I have problems just following the traditional directions...I like to shake things up.  I have already decided that all of the "fins" will be yellow, and I folded them fabric for the stomach to give it some texture...I am just hoping it works out.  And sometimes, I think that I can do something a better way than they say to, and yes, this sometimes gets me in trouble.
  2. I went through a sewing phase once where I sewed all sorts of stuff - shirts, pants, skirts, teddy bears (I mass produced these haha), etc.  However, that has been almost 15 years ago!  I have not used a pattern since then, so we will see how much I remember from middle school!
So, if you are bored and want to fill your life with my sewing drama feel free check back, OR maybe you want to join and make your own AWESOME halloween costume for you or your child :)
